Everything that’s in it.

Nothing else. No fragrance, no preservatives, no fillers. If you can’t pronounce it, it shouldn’t be in the jar.

Witch hazel

Hamamelis virginiana

A traditional astringent base — gentle on the skin, carries the essential oils evenly across it.

Distilled grain alcohol

Ethanol

A clean preservative and dispersant. Helps the spray dry quickly without stickiness.

Essential oil blend

Citrus, lavender, thyme & herbs

The active deterrents. Citrus, florals, and herbs that bugs dislike and skin tolerates well.

Vegetable glycerin

Glycerol

Plant-derived. Softens the spray on skin and binds the formula together.

Filtered water

Aqua

The carrier. Pure spring-filtered water — no chlorine, no fluoride.

[ A NOTE FROM SHANNON ]

Why this product exists.

I made this for my own people, and for the long Portuguese summers we spend mostly outside. I wasn't willing to spray DEET on a toddler — and most of the 'natural' bug sprays on the shelf either don't work or smell so synthetic you wonder what's actually in them.

So I worked out a formula with the traditional herbs that bugs avoid — citrus peel, lavender, thyme — on a witch hazel base. It smells of an herb garden in the evening. It needs to be reapplied more often than synthetic sprays; that's the honest trade-off for using nothing harsh. We make it in small batches each spring, and when it's gone, it's gone until next year.
